Colour, highlights or grey blending: what each one does

When the first greys appear, most people go straight to all-over colour. It works, but it is not the only option, and it is not always the one that grows out best. There are three main routes, and they do quite different things.

  • All-over colour (tint): one shade applied from root to ends, or just to the regrowth. It covers greys, so the result is uniform. The trade-off is the line: as your hair grows, a band of grey or white roots appears against the colour, and on dark hair that contrast is easy to see.
  • Highlights (babylights or balayage): fine strands are lightened so your greys sit among lighter pieces instead of standing out against a dark base. Highlights do not cover greys; they disguise them. That is exactly the point: when the greys grow back, they mix with the lighter strands, so there is no harsh root line.
  • Grey blending: not a single technique but a goal. Your colourist combines fine highlights, and sometimes a softer colour, so your natural greys become part of the result instead of something you have to hide every few weeks.

If you want to compare the highlight techniques in more detail, our guide to balayage vs babylights vs shatush vs highlights explains how each one is applied and what it looks like.

By base colour and amount of grey

There is no single right answer, but your starting point narrows the options a lot. Use this table as a first guide, not a prescription: Adolfo confirms the plan after seeing your hair in good light.

Your natural base A few scattered greys Around half grey Mostly grey
Dark blonde or light brown Babylights Babylights, placed more densely Babylights or a gradual transition to your natural grey
Medium to dark brown Fine babylights, or colour if you want full coverage Babylights combined with a softer colour A planned transition over several visits
Very dark brown or black Colour or ammonia-free colour; fine babylights for a softer grow-out Colour and fine highlights together A planned transition, explained step by step

Two things change the plan more than anything else: whether your hair already has colour on it (dyed hair lightens differently from natural hair) and how much contrast you are happy to see as it grows.

Dark hair with greys: babylights, balayage or colour

Dark bases are where people hesitate most, because white hair against black or dark brown is the strongest contrast there is. Some honest pointers:

  • Babylights are usually the most effective highlights for blending greys, because they are fine and placed from the root, which is exactly where greys grow. They cost €85–145 depending on length. See our babylights in Barcelona page.
  • Balayage is painted by hand and tends to start a little below the root. It gives lovely light through the lengths, but on its own it hides fewer greys at the root than babylights. It suits people with only a few greys who also want a lighter, sun-kissed look. It costs €120–195; more on our balayage page.
  • Colour is still the choice if you want your greys fully covered and prefer one even shade. It costs €45–95 depending on length.

Blending on very dark hair means lightening it, and lightening dark hair well takes skill: the aim is a soft beige or caramel strand, not a stripe. How light you can go in one appointment depends on your hair, so Adolfo tells you at the consultation what is realistic for the first session.

The transition to your natural grey

Many clients want to stop covering their greys altogether. The hard part is the middle phase, when half your length is dyed and the root is natural. Grey blending makes that phase much easier to live with:

  1. Consultation: you look at your regrowth together and agree how far you want to go and how quickly.
  2. Breaking up the line: fine highlights are placed so the boundary between the old colour and the new growth is far less visible.
  3. Follow-up visits: as more of your natural grey grows in, each visit adjusts the blend, and regular trims gradually remove the old colour.

Whether it can be done in one session or needs several depends on how much previous colour you have and how dark it is. We explain the plan before we start, so you know what to expect from each step.

The ammonia-free option

If you prefer a formula without ammonia, we offer ammonia-free colour at €45–85. Many clients choose it simply as a preference. Whether it gives you the level of grey coverage you want depends on your hair and how much grey you have, so Adolfo will tell you honestly at the consultation whether it is the right fit or whether highlights would work better for you. More details are on our hair colour page.

Grey hair in men: colour and urban highlights

Grey blending is not just for women. Plenty of men want to soften the grey at the sides without the flat, obviously dyed look of an all-over tint. For short hair we offer men's colour or highlights at €80, and our urban highlights pack at €85. The approach is the same: soften the contrast rather than erase every grey, so the result looks natural as it grows. You can combine it with a fade or a classic cut; see our barber services.

Upkeep and touch-ups

The real advantage of blending over full coverage shows up over time. With all-over colour, a root line appears as soon as your hair grows. With fine highlights, the regrowth mixes in, so the grow-out looks softer. How often you need to come back depends on how fast your hair grows, how much grey you have and the technique used, so Adolfo gives you a realistic rhythm at your consultation rather than a generic number. That also lets you work out what a year of colour will cost you: the price per visit multiplied by the number of visits he recommends.

At home, a sulphate-free shampoo and a hydrating mask help keep blended hair soft and shiny, and a purple shampoo used now and then keeps lighter strands from looking yellowish. Use a heat protectant before blow-drying or straightening.

Frequently asked questions

What covers grey hair better, colour or highlights?

Colour covers greys completely with one even shade. Highlights do not cover them; they blend them among lighter strands so the regrowth looks softer. Which suits you depends on your base and how much grey you have.

Do babylights work to disguise grey hair?

Yes. Babylights are usually the most effective highlights for blending greys, because they are fine and placed from the root. At Fusion Beauty they cost €85–145 depending on length.

Can I get highlights for grey hair if my hair is very dark?

Usually yes. On very dark hair the colourist lightens fine strands to a soft shade so the greys blend in. How light you can go in the first session depends on your hair, and Adolfo explains it at the consultation.

How much do highlights for grey hair cost in Barcelona?

At Fusion Beauty, babylights cost €85–145, balayage €120–195 and all-over colour €45–95, depending on length. We confirm the price before we start.

Is there ammonia-free colour for grey hair?

Yes, ammonia-free colour costs €45–85. Whether it gives the coverage you want depends on your hair and how much grey you have, and we tell you at the consultation.

Can men blend their greys too?

Yes. Men's colour or highlights for short hair costs €80, and the urban highlights pack €85. The aim is a natural look that grows out softly.

How often do I need to come back?

It depends on how fast your hair grows, how much grey you have and the technique used. Adolfo gives you a realistic rhythm at the consultation; blended highlights grow out more softly than all-over colour.
