Microblading vs microshading vs brow micropigmentation
- by Equipo Fusion Beauty
Quick answer: Microblading draws fine hair strokes by hand with a micro-blade for the most natural finish; microshading builds a soft powdered or shaded effect with tiny dots; and machine brow micropigmentation can do hair strokes, shading or a combination, and usually lasts longer, especially on oily skin. At Fusion Beauty in Sant Antoni, Barcelona, microblading/nanoblading and brow micropigmentation cost €152, with a touch-up at €90.
Three techniques for semi-permanent brows
All three techniques deposit pigment into the upper layers of the skin to fill, define or reshape your brows. They are not a traditional tattoo: the pigment sits more superficially and fades gradually over time. What changes is the tool, the finish and how each skin type responds. Understanding these differences before your consultation makes it much easier to agree on a design that suits your face, your skin and the amount of upkeep you are happy with.
Microblading. Done by hand with a pen holding a row of fine micro-needles that create tiny hair-shaped strokes. The result mimics real brow hairs and looks very natural up close. It works especially well on normal or dry skin; on very oily skin the strokes can blur and fade faster.
Nanoblading. A hair-stroke variant performed with a machine and an ultra-fine needle. It creates strokes similar to microblading, with a very fine, precise finish.
Microshading. Instead of lines, tiny dots are placed to create a soft shaded effect, similar to wearing brow powder. It is useful if you want more density or have sparse brows, and it copes better with combination or oily skin.
Machine brow micropigmentation. The umbrella term for brow work with a permanent make-up machine. It can create hair strokes, shading (powder brows) or a combination of both. Because pigment placement is more controlled, it usually lasts longer.

Which one should you choose?
- You have some brow hair and want to fill gaps very naturally: microblading or nanoblading.
- You have oily skin or large pores: microshading or machine micropigmentation; manual hair strokes tend to blur.
- You fill your brows with powder or pencil every day: shading gives a similar look without daily make-up.
- You have very sparse brows: a combination finish (strokes at the front, shading through the body) usually works best.
- You want minimum maintenance: machine micropigmentation usually lasts the longest.
Important: these treatments are not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and you should consult your doctor first if you take blood thinners or isotretinoin, have uncontrolled diabetes, are prone to keloids or poor healing, or have a skin condition in the area. If in doubt, speak to your doctor before booking.
Healing, aftercare and longevity
- For the first few days your brows look darker and more intense; this is normal.
- Between days 5 and 10 light flaking or small scabs appear: do not pick them.
- Avoid getting the area wet, make-up, saunas, swimming pools and direct sun for the first week, or as your artist advises.
- The colour softens as it heals and settles after about 4 weeks.
- If needed, the touch-up is usually done 4–8 weeks later to set the pigment and refine the shape.
- Once healed, use sunscreen on the area to help the colour last longer.
How to choose a salon in Barcelona
- Ask to see healed results, not just fresh ones.
- Check they use single-use needles and work hygienically.
- Make sure they draw the design first and you approve it before starting.
- Ask about the pigment and how its colour evolves over time.
- Ask for contraindications and aftercare instructions in writing.
